Frequently Asked Questions on the 1992 Water Convention: Exploring Possibilities with the Latin American and the Caribbean Countries

Online

07 December 2021

The Latin American and Caribbean countries sharing transboundary basins are facing growing challenges, such as water scarcity, which can put regional stability at risk. There is a therefore a need for mechanisms to guarantee the sustainable management of transboundary water resources in the region.

The event explored the opportunities the Water Convention might offer to strengthen the rational use of water resources in Latin American and the Caribbean region. It presented the benefits of participating in the Convention, the Convention’s legal provisions and institutional mechanism, as well as tools and mechanisms available to support countries preparing for accession to the Convention and implementing it.

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations Office, the World Trade Organization, and other International Organizations in Geneva, on behalf of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) and the Secretariat of the Water Convention, hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
