Presenting the 2021 global status of water and sanitation

Monday 23 August 17:00-18:25 CEST and Wednesday 25 August 07:30-08:55 CEST (repeated)

23 - 25 August 2021

This event will launch the ‘2021 Progress Updates’ reports for seven SDG 6 global indicators presenting the results of the integrated process of collecting country data on the SDG 6 global indicators in 2020. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss results and lessons learned with UN custodian agencies and their implications for policymaking and acceleration toward achieving SDG 6.

To deliver the 2030 Agenda, credible data are needed to underpin sector advocacy, stimulate political commitment, inform decision making and trigger well-placed investment towards health, environment and economic gains. To be able to follow-up on and review progress towards SDG 6 we need to know the status of water and sanitation at multiple points in time.

To support countries in monitoring water- and sanitation-related issues, and to report on global progress towards SDG 6, in 2014 UN-Water launched the Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6, which includes the eight UN agencies who are the custodians of the 11 SDG 6 indicators.

During 2020, the focus of the Initiative was on working with Member States to generate, compile and analyse data for SDG 6 and all its global indicators. In this session, the 2020 results will be presented. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss these results with UN custodian agencies in small Market Stalls dedicated to each indicator. In each Market Stall they will also share lessons from the process and consider how these data can be used for policymaking and to accelerate progress toward achieving SDG 6.
