Key events and decisions
Among the highlights of this meeting of this CoP are the celebration of Convention’s thirtieth anniversary, a UNECE/OECD Seminar on the effective management of technological risks of accidents triggered by natural hazards (29 November 2022, 12:00 – 18:00, with a lunch break from 13:00-15:00), and the adoption of a Decision on Natech risk management in the ECE region and beyond. Parties will also be invited to endorse a Roadmap for action for strengthening tailings safety in follow-up to the Decision 2020/1 on tailings safety taken at CoP-11.
Format
CoP-12 is being organized by UNECE in cooperation with the Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) of Norway as an in-person event to be held in Geneva, 29 November – 1 December 2022. Participation in person is required for decision-making and for the purposes of determining a quorum. Remote participation is feasible of those unable to travel. Remote interventions will however have to be limited to 30 minutes for each 3-hour session to allow interpretation as per the relevant UNOG rules; the remote delivery of statements can thus not be guaranteed. Delegates are kindly requested to send their statements and/or presentations to the secretariat four weeks in advance of the meeting, by 1 November 2022, via email ([email protected])
Organizational procedures and practical information
Delegates are kindly requested to register for the meeting (whether participating in person or remotely) by 21 November 2022 by completing the registration form.
Participants coming to Geneva who require a visa are encouraged to register as soon as possible and start the visa procedure at least 5 weeks in advance of the meeting. Since Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, visa applications might take up to 5 weeks.
The original of credentials issued by Heads of State or Government or Ministers for Foreign Affairs should be submitted to the secretariat at the beginning of the meeting. For verification purposes, the secretariat will appreciate receiving a scanned copy in advance by 1 November 2022 via email ([email protected]), with a copy to the permanent missions to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva. Parties are strongly encouraged to include at least one representative of their Permanent Mission in their credentials and to authorize all members of the delegation to participate in the sessions and to take decisions on behalf of the Party. Information on Covid-19 rules at UNOG premises
Although since 3 May 2022 most of Covid-19 measures at the UN Geneva premises have been lifted, all delegates are encouraged to observe safety and hygiene principles, such as regular hand washing, cough/sneeze etiquette and keeping safe distances. Masks remain required in conference rooms until further notice and recommended in all indoor common spaces.
