On 3 March 2016, ITU and UNECE convened the Symposium on The Future Networked Car within the 86thGeneva International Motor Show.
Intelligent transport systems and automated driving are fast moving towards widespread commercialization and market acceptance. High levels of automation – the penultimate step to fully automated driving – are expected on the road by 2020 and hold great promise to improve road safety, reduce congestion and emissions, and increase the accessibility of personal mobility to the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Held on the first public day of the Geneva International Motor Show, this international symposium brought together representatives of vehicle manufacturers, the automotive and information and communication technology (ICT) industries, governments and their regulators to discuss the status and future of vehicle communications and automated driving. The Future Networked Car examined advances in the area of connected vehicles, from the perspectives of business, technology and regulation. Technical sessions highlighted the crucial roles of connectivity, information security and privacy. The symposium also discussed how standards bodies can best collaborate to meet industry needs and to achieve interoperability.
An open meeting of the Collaboration on ITS Communication Standards took place on 4 March 2016 at ITU headquarters to review the state of ITS communication standards and discussed the road ahead. The 168th session of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) took place from 8-11 March 2016.
