Rationale

The National Forest Policy Dialogue is organized by the Committee on Forestry and Wildlife under the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan with the support of it the support of the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section.

Kazakhstan is working on the development of the strategic document for the forest sector in the country. Within the framework of the technical assistance, the group of national consultants, in close collaboration with international consultant and joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section developed the “Master Plan for the Development of the Forestry Sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2030” and action plan for its implementation. Further, in 2018 Kazakhstan hosted the Ministerial Roundtable on Forest Landscape Restoration and the Bonn Challenge and committed to restore over 1,5 million hectares by 2030. After ambition pledge, a technical support was necessary to align targets on forest landscape restoration with other priorities for the forest sector of Kazakhstan.

In order to secure involvement of stakeholders in the decision-making process and participatory approach in the development of the document, it was decided to organize the National Forest Policy Dialogue to review and comment the developed documents.  On the 4 March 2020 wide range of international and national experts, including national forestry government institutions, civil society, academia, private sector and international organizations will meet in Nur-Sultan will review the “Master Plan for the Development of the Forestry Sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2030” and action plan for its implementation, as well as align commitment under the Bonn Challenge in the plan of work.
