Restoration of forests and landscapes in UNECE region

Trees

Joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section works on providing policy advice and strengthening capacities of UNECE Member States on scaling up efforts for restoration of degraded forests and landscapes. This includes support with the development of national and regional strategies, raising awareness on opportunities for financing forest landscape restoration and strengthening technical capacities of Member States for its monitoring.

Ministerial Roundtable on Forest Landscape Restoration and the Bonn Challenge in the Caucasus and Central Asia (June 2018, Kazakhstan), organized by the joint Section, has lead to the adoption of the Astana Resolution by six countries from the region and a total pledge of over 2,5 million hectares. In May 2019 Azerbaijan joined the Bonn Challenge at the Forest Congress, organized by the joint Section, which brought the total pledge to over 3 million hectares. Another Ministerial Meeting for countries of Eastern and South-East Europe is planned for October 2021.

ECCA30

UNECE and FAO are part of the Secretariat for the country-led restoration initiative ECCA30, along with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Bank and the World Resources Institute. The ECCA30 initiative seeks to bring 30 million hectares of degraded and deforested land in Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia into restoration by 2030.
