European Timber Trends and Prospects to the year 2000 and beyond (Vol 1) (ETTS IV)

Published:
ECE/TIM/30 Volume I, this study, referred to hereafter as ETTS IV (it is the fourth in the series of European timber trends studies), is intended above all as a tool for decision-makers and their advisers, governments, forest owners, forest industries, traders in forest products and others who have an interest in the outlook for the forest and forest products sector.
Its objectives are therefore:
a) To present and analyse past trends in the forest and forest products sector which may affect the outlook for the future;
b) To prepare forecasts, wherever possible in quantitative terms, for consumption and supply of forest products, and of non-wood goods and services, and to examine the outlook for the sector as a whole by comparing the various forecasts.

Great importance has been attached at every stage to presenting the source of data, evaluating their quality and presenting the methods of analysis used, so that readers will be able:
a) To evaluate the quality of the forecasts;
b) In some cases to prepare alternative forecasts.

Most of the comment is at the regional or country group level. However, in order to facilitate analysis and help decision-makers at the national level, data are provided by country whenever possible. The study itself (volume I) is accompanied by a companion volume mostly consisting of statistical material with national data (volume II). There are also a number of publications connected with ETTS IV, listed in the explanatory notes.
