Nigeria is taking action to improve its road safety situation. Following its accession in October 2018 to the 5 key UN road safety Conventions, the country is stepping up efforts to ensure their swift implementation, with help from UNECE.
The recent capacity building workshop organised by Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) with the support of a UNECE team of experts focused on the activation of the Conventions’ practical provisions - which cover road signs and road markings, road traffic, the transport of dangerous goods and vehicle safety, helping to address all the major causes of road crashes.
The event highlighted the Global Framework Plan of Action for Road Safety approved under the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund and included in the strategy of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee until 2030. The Framework serves as a benchmarking tool to guide the establishment and enhancement of a comprehensive national road safety system. It shows how the UN road safety Conventions support the establishment of the comprehensive national system.
This mission was also the occasion to meet with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, H.E. Boss Mustapha, who is responsible for ensuring the effective coordination of the ministries and monitoring of the implementation of government policies and programmes.
UNECE congratulated Boss Mustapha on the country’s commitment and bold action to improve road safety, shown through the accessions and efforts of the government and FRSC Marshal Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi to implement the six UN conventions which are considered crucial to improving road safety.
