H.E. Mr. Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport, United Kingdom

On 6 July, the Special Envoy met UK’s Secretary for Transport, providing Mr. Grayling with an overview of his mandate, key responsibilities and priorities, including the recent establishment of the UNRSTF. He further applauded UK’s leadership and commitment to road safety, demonstrated by UK’s ranking among the top three best performing countries in the world and recent ratification of the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic. 

The Special Envoy shared about recent establishment of the UNRSTF and gave an overview of the timeline for its operationalization. He further invited the UK to become one of the founding donors of the UNRSTF. The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) has been a key donor of the Global Road Safety Facility hosted at the World Bank. 

H.E. Jong-moon Choi, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in France

On 9 July, during his meeting with Ambassador Choi, the Special Envoy presented four priorities of his mandate and shared about his global efforts to improve road safety. The Special Envoy further shared about a newly launched UNRSTF, aimed at supporting Member States’ efforts towards improving road safety, and invited Republic of Korea to consider support. Considering that Korea has acceded to two out of six United Nations road safety conventions, the Special Envoy encouraged its accession and successful implementation of the remaining four.

The Special Envoy presented his mandate and priorities, including an overview of his global efforts to enhance road safety. He further shared about recently established UNRSTF and expressed high appreciation for Argentina’s leadership in the region, as demonstrated by their membership in the Advisory Board of the UNRSTF. Considering that Argentina has not acceded to any of United Nations road safety convention, the Special Envoy encouraged Argentina to become a contracting party to all six.
