The Third report on implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, 2020–2023 presents the outcomes of the third reporting exercise, which took place in 2023/24. It provides an analysis of the national reports submitted by Parties to the Convention. The progress report describes in detail implementation of the Convention with regard to agreements and arrangements, joint bodies for transboundary water cooperation and activities such as data and information exchange, joint monitoring and assessment, prevention of accidental pollution and cooperation on floods, droughts and climate change. A chapter on selected basins takes an in-depth look at the development of cooperation in the Rhine, Dniester and Syr Darya river basins and the Senegal-Mauritanian Aquifer Basin. The concluding chapter highlights achievements and specific challenges in the period 2020–2023, and outlines strategic approaches to future action. The annexes provide an overview of reported river and lake basins, agreements and arrangements and joint bodies with participation of Parties.
The Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Mid-term status of SDG Indicator 6.5.2, with a special focus on Climate Change – 2024 discusses the reporting process, presents the latest data from the 2023 monitoring exercise, analyses SDG indicator 6.5.2 data within the context of climate change, and summarises key findings and highlights critical steps that should be taken to accelerate progress on transboundary water cooperation, climate change and the SDGs
The Second report on implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, 2017–2020 presents the outcomes of the second reporting exercise, which took place in 2020/21. This synthesis report details the significant results achieved by the Parties to the Convention in implementing transboundary water cooperation but also identifies gaps and problematic areas in implementation. Based on the analysed data, the report provides recommendations to Parties and international partners on possible actions to improve integrated water resources management and transboundary cooperation. The publication aims to strengthen countries’ understanding of the requirements of the Convention and contribute to its effective implementation and to improved transboundary water cooperation worldwide.
Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Global status of SDG indicator 6.5.2 and acceleration needs, 2021 seeks to build upon both the findings and recommendations set out in the first report published in 2018. It presents the advances made since the first reporting round, including the increased number of countries that engaged in the exercise and improvements in the quality of data submitted. The report also provides a synthesis analysis of country data at both the global and regional levels across both 2017 and 2020 monitoring exercises. Finally, this second report reflects upon the recommendations made in the first report, and considers further actions needed to accelerate progress on transboundary water cooperation, particularly in light of the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework and the United Nations Decade of Action.
Summary Progress Update 2021: SDG 6 – Water and Sanitation for All provides an executive summary of the 2021 status of SDG 6, assessed through official country data on the global indicators for SDG 6. This report has been produced by the UN-Water Integrated Monitoring Initiative on SDG 6 (IMI-SDG6), which brings together the United Nations organizations that are formally mandated to compile country data on the SDG 6 global indicators. The report presents the latest view on the status of SDG 6 achievement across the world and identifies five factors for accelerating its achievement under the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework.
The Guide to reporting under the Water Convention and as a contribution to SDG indicator 6.5.2 was developed as a result of a review of the first reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.2 and under the Water Convention in 2017–2018, which highlighted the need to assist States in completing the template for reporting. This Guide provides guidance on preparing national reports, by explaining the different sections of the template, clarifying key terminologies, and giving specific advice to experts responsible for the reporting process on how to complete the various questions and the reporting template.
Progress on transboundary water cooperation under the Water Convention presents the results of the first reporting exercise under the Water Convention carried out in 2017-2018. The report compares the Water Convention provisions with the responses to the reporting template by all reporting Parties. The report also offers insights on the reported implementation of the Convention and the gaps to be addressed, as well as insights from practice through case studies. The Annexes provide a detailed overview of reporting Parties, transboundary waters and agreements and arrangements that have been reported on.
Progress on transboundary water cooperation: Global baseline for SDG indicator 6.5.2 presents the results of the baseline reporting exercise on indicator 6.5.2 carried out in 2017-2018. It offers an analysis of the progress achieved in establishing operational arrangements for transboundary waters, and the gaps that remain. The report shows that an acceleration in strengthening transboundary water cooperation is urgently needed to be able to achieve target 6.5, face growing water challenges and prevent conflicts on water use.
The Sustainable Development Goal 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation builds on the data available for the 11 SDG 6 global indicators. Representing a joint position from the United Nations family, the report offers guidance to understanding global progress on SDG 6 and its interdependencies with other goals and targets. It also provides insight into how countries can plan and act to ensure that no one is left behind when implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
