The Second report on implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, 2017–2020 presents the outcomes of the second reporting exercise, which took place in 2020/21. This synthesis report details the significant results achieved by the Parties to the Convention in implementing transboundary water cooperation but also identifies gaps and problematic areas in implementation. Based on the analysed data, the report provides recommendations to Parties and international partners on possible actions to improve integrated water resources management and transboundary cooperation. The publication aims to strengthen countries’ understanding of the requirements of the Convention and contribute to its effective implementation and to improved transboundary water cooperation worldwide.

Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Global status of SDG indicator 6.5.2 and acceleration needs, 2021

Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Global status of SDG indicator 6.5.2 and acceleration needs, 2021 seeks to build upon both the findings and recommendations set out in the first report published in 2018. It presents the advances made since the first reporting round, including the increased number of countries that engaged in the exercise and improvements in the quality of data submitted. The report also provides a synthesis analysis of country data at both the global and regional levels across both 2017 and 2020 monitoring exercises. Finally, this second report reflects upon the recommendations made in the first report, and considers further actions needed to accelerate progress on transboundary water cooperation, particularly in light of the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework and the United Nations Decade of Action.

The Guide to reporting under the Water Convention and as a contribution to SDG indicator 6.5.2 was developed as a result of a review of the first reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.2 and under the Water Convention in 2017–2018, which highlighted the need to assist States in completing the template for reporting. This Guide provides guidance on preparing national reports, by explaining the different sections of the template, clarifying key terminologies, and giving specific advice to experts responsible for the reporting process on how to complete the various questions and the reporting template.
