Roundtable of In Focus: SDG 11

01 October 2019
Palais des Nations Geneva Switzerland

Venue: Rooom VIII, Palais des Nations

Cities and human settlements are where many of our accomplishments and obstacles to achievement of the 2030 Agenda are manifested. They are home to concrete challenges as well as enormous opportunities for fostering innovation and knowledge-sharing to overcome these challenges. Sustainable urbanization has clear impacts on a wide range of issues within the 2030 Agenda, such as sustainable consumption and production, affordable and clean energy, sustainable transportation, clean water and sanitation, and life on land.

The UNECE Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management is organizing In Focus: SDG 11. This roundtable discussion will provide a platform for dialogue on the successes and challenges in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and other urban-related SDGs.

It is a follow-up to the review of SDG11 and the relevant urban SDGs since last year’s Regional Forum for Sustainable Development for the UNECE region and the High-level Political Forum. The event is a continued effort to review the progress towards achieving of SDG11 and the relevant urban related goals by 2030. It will be a follow-up to the IN FOCUS: SDG 11 event that was held last year.

The roundtable will also provide a platform to:

  • Foster cooperation between UN agencies, private, public, NGOs, academia and civil society
  • Brainstorm to create synergies to promote effective implementation of SDG 11; and
  • Create joint initiatives and activities to ensure the highest and coordinated impact in implementing SDG 11 and other urban related SDGs.

The roundtable discussion will encourage participants from various backgrounds: UN, NGOs, private and public sector, local governments etc. to connect and work together to achieve SDG 11 and implement the new urban agenda.
