Co-organized by UNECE, DG GROW and EuroGeoSurveys

Extraction, trade, and consumption of raw materials have increased exponentially. Growing demand from emerging, developing, and traditional industrial economies requires a transformation of industry and society to sustainable production and consumption patterns.

The climate emergency and other geopolitical challenges call for unprecedented international cooperation on an immediate low-carbon energy transition to reduce negative environmental and societal impacts. To support the change, raw materials stakeholders must focus on collaborative efforts for secure supply chains with strong partnerships in sustainable sourcing of materials in Europe and abroad.

Resilient supply chains require real-time, relevant, and comparable raw materials information. The United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) is a well-proven resource classification and reporting system for raw materials, amongst other applications. UNFC provides unified socially, environmentally, and economically referenced information necessary for improved policy and decision-making.

Europe has made rapid progress in sustainable resource management by harmonizing data using UNFC. This event, co-organized by UNECE, DG GROW and EuroGeoSurveys, will provide an overview of the current progress and opportunities to accelerate the implementation of UNFC in Europe. The adoption of UNFC is expected to expand the use of the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS) principles and tools to align with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This event was part of EU Raw Materials Week, funded by the European Union.
