ONLINE workshop “Post Covid-19 Recovery Action Plan for Informal Settlements in the UNECE Region – Validation Workshop”

02 December 2020

9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Informal settlements suffer from inadequate housing, the lack of basic services and security of tenure. Urgent action is needed to enable residents to stay safe and healthy and thus increase resilience to future pandemics. Informal settlements are particularly vulnerable to the impact of disease outbreaks, as disease monitoring and containment can be particularly challenging.

UNECE is preparing the Post COVID-19 Recovery Action Plan for Informal Settlements in the UNECE Region, which has the objective of offering effective responses to mitigate current COVID-19 challenges and improve urban resilience against future threats. This Recovery Action Plan is targeted at local and national authorities, and outlines goals, targets and actions for immediate emergency response as well as mid- and long-term actions to build back better in informal settlements.

The objectives of the online workshop are to present the main policy areas of the Recovery Action Plan, and collect feedback from leading experts and local and national representatives. This feedback will be considered when refining the draft report; in elements such as policy areas, objectives, targets and actions. The discussion will be supported by data and the initials results of city assessment reports that are currently being prepared in the four cities of the project: Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; Podgorica, Montenegro; Skopje, North Macedonia; and Tirana, Albania.

This workshop will focus on three main areas:

  • Built Environment and Infrastructure
  • Access to Goods and Services
  • Inclusivity, Engagement, and Justice

Each of these areas will be introduced by the lead authors of the Recovery Action Plan, followed by feedback from experts of the UNECE Nexus Team on Smart Sustainable Cities for All Ages, academia and civil society. Local and national representatives are also invited to provide their input and feedback during the discussion session.

The event will be held on Zoom in English and Russian.

The workshop is jointly organized by the UNECE Housing and Land Management Unit, the UNECE Nexus on Smart Sustainable Cities for All Ages and the University of Geneva.
