The UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management, in collaboration with UN-Habitat and the European Committee of the Regions, organized a meeting on ‘Evidence-based policies for sustainable housing and urban development’ in Brussels on 13 December 2018.

The objective of the event was to discuss the role of evidence in crafting sustainable housing and urban development policies in the European Union and the UNECE region. The discussion focused on approaches to data collection and management in the context of the SDG11 in the EU and the UNECE region.

During the event, a range of issues were debated on:

   (i)   policy frameworks, methodologies and tools for implementation of SDG 11 "Sustainable cities and communities";

   (ii)  policy indicators for sustainable housing and urban development  at international, regional and local levels;

   (iii) roles of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies in policy monitoring;

   (iv) types of evidence  for sustainable housing policies - the case of the State Aid for affordable housing;

   (v)  collaborative data production and management - Public Private Partnerships in statistics for SDG11;

   (vi) contribution of the New Urban Agenda and the EC Urban Partnerships to policy-making in the field of housing and many others.

The event feeds into the project ‘Evidence-based policies for sustainable housing and urban development in selected countries with economies in transition’ that the UNECE in collaboration with UN-Habitat has been implementing since January 2016. The aim of the Project is to strengthen national capacities for the development of evidence-based policies for sustainable housing and urban development.
