Laying the Foundation for Sustainable Development Goals: Role of Smart Sustainable Cities

02 May 2016
Room A, ITU Tower Geneva Switzerland

At the World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS)

ITU together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) organized this event to meet the growing demand for guidance on establishing smarter and more sustainable cities which will in turn assist in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also help contribute effectively to the Habitat III Process.

The objective of this event was to highlight the potential of smart sustainable cities in securing the main targets set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals and providing inputs to the New Urban Agenda. This event also provided a platform for discussions on fulfilling the global smart sustainable city agenda.

ITU and UNECE presented their joint key performance indicators for smart sustainable cities to assess how the use of ICTs has an impact on the sustainability of cities. These indicators are expected to drive smart city transitions and help improve urban functionalities, raise the standard of living and ensure environmental, economic and social sustainability.
