Background

The Convention represents a key United Nations legal and institutional framework promoting clean air policy development. Signed in 1979, it became the first international treaty to deal with air pollution on a broad regional basis. Over the last 40 years, cooperation under the Convention has led to significant achievements in air pollutant emission reductions, with benefits for human health, the environment and the economy.

The thirty-ninth session of the Executive Body will mark the 40th anniversary of the Convention. On this occasion, a special high-level event on clean air will be organized on 11 and 12 December. This will be an opportunity to discuss milestones under the Convention, progress in the region, and visions for future development of the Convention. The event will include the launch of the global forum for cooperation on clean air. An Anniversary Declaration is being prepared by the Bureau of the Executive Body. It is expected to be approved on 11 December.
