Introduction

The regional knowledge sharing platform aims to provide in the long term a comprehensive knowledge base on environmental monitoring and assessment related good practices and experience. It aims to contribute to the strengthening of capacities of national authorities, including environmental and statistical agencies, and other interested users to collect and produce required data, to apply environmental indicators and data in accordance with the Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) principles and practices and to use the information for improved policy- and decision-making. Furthermore, the platform aims to strengthen capacities in improving the accessibility and use of regularly updated and high-quality environmental indicators, within the framework of SEIS, to respond to international indicator-based reporting obligations, including monitoring progress towards the SDGs which play a vital role in communicating commonly agreed targets.

The regional knowledge sharing platform, offers users an opportunity to learn in a first step from good SDGs practices shared during a webinar series and conferences related to environmental monitoring and assessment within the framework of the UNECE Environmental Monitoring and Assessment programme and in particular the project on “Improved environmental monitoring and assessment in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus” funded by the UN Development Account. Through the platform all the materials developed for this project including a self-paced e-learning course, webinar materials, thematic overviews on various environmental themes and guidelines are made available. Also, other relevant products produced under the programme will be made available over time. The materials aim to raise the literacy on the important interface of data to policy.

This will enable other countries and/or other interested parties to use such content and replicate good practices. The development and open sharing of training materials, guidelines and other content for technical training on environmental monitoring and assessment as well as SDG reporting may not only reduce the cost and time associated with developing such materials. It may also help to synergise SEIS-related training across the pan-European region.

The materials from the webinars and conferences under the UNDA funded project were processed in order to support users with the most relevant aspects for policy interaction.
For each of the five tackled thematic fields covered in the webinars, you will find the main messages, the connections to the SDGs, challenges, examples for good practices and a “Question-and-Answer” section. In addition, you will find links to additional materials and to a self-paced e-learning tool, which is created to stimulate awareness of the importance of data for environmental policy. We hope you will find the material informative, and the knowledge-sharing platform will support you in your valuable work on DATA for POLICY.

If you wish to share relevant information and good practices from your own work please contact the secretariat of the Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and Assessment at: [email protected].
