Türkiye: A upper-middle income country with a population of 84.7 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 6.5 (WHO, 2023). Türkiye has acceded to 6 out of 7 UN road safety legal instruments.
During the mission, the Special Envoy contributed to the World Cities Day organized by the Government of Türkiye, and to the UN-Habitat-UNRSF Mayors Forum for Road Safety on its margins. On the occasion of the latter, the UN-Habitat Executive Director, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif handed over a special citation to the Special Envoy in appreciation of his relentless efforts to address global road safety.
Furthermore, on the margins of the above, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads and explore future collaborations:
• H.E. Ms. Emine Erdogan, First Lady, Türkiye;
• H.E. Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady, Sierra Leone.
Lastly, the Special Envoy visited the Command Center of the Turkish National Police led by Mr. Zeki Bal, Chief Traffic Police Officer.
