On 3 September, the Special Envoy virtually met with Mr. Selwin Hart, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Climate Action and Assistant Secretary-General, to share about his mandate and inform of the global road safety situation.
The Special Envoy highlighted the connection between safe and sustainable mobility and climate change and elaborated on how investing in sustainable and safe means of mobility/transportation will also help mitigating climate change. This is also related to the fact that extreme climate change will also impact safety on the roads. Furthermore, the Special Envoy updated on the UN General Assembly Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety (A/RES/74/299).
The following opportunities to collaborate and to put safe and sustainable mobility and transport on the Special Advisor’s agenda were also discussed:
1) Regulating used cars imports with high emissions and poor safety features, 2) Promoting public transport and active mobility (SDG 11.2), 3) Encouraging governments to have an infrastructure maintenance strategy in Climate Change measures, and 4) Promoting lower speed limits and preventing traffic congestion in order to lower CO2 emissions.
