Workshop on Recent Developments in Evaluation of Uranium and Thorium Resources and Possibilities for Application of UNFC

The Workshop was hosted by the Government of Portugal and opened by Mr. Carlos Caxaria, Deputy Director General, Directorate General for Energy and Geology, Ministry of Economy and Employment of Portugal. 

More than 60 Government representatives with expertise in uranium, thorium and minerals participated from Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Mongolia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom and Venezuela.

Mine Visit
On 17 October, a site visit was undertaken to the Urgeiriça Uranium and Radium Mine, which is an underground mine that used conventional techniques until 1973 and, after that, in-situ leaching to recover low-grade ore.  A uranium mill facility was also built nearby for ore processing.  The visit was organized by Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, SA (EDM), which is the state enterprise responsible for the restoration of mining sites in Portugal. Technical details relating to the remediation of the mine were explained during the visit.
