Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations System in the region of Europe and Central Asia is working in an integrated manner to support member States in their aspiration to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- The Regional UN System provides coordinated and pooled support to help member States achieve the 2030 Agenda. The Regional UN System makes its thematic expertise housed in different UN entities available to country level work. Concretely, the Regional UN System develops tailored guidance on the SDGs for UN Country Teams and provides effective and coherent implementation support to countries that demand it, under the acronym MAPS (Mainstreaming, Acceleration and Policy Support).
- The Regional UN System contributes to the organization of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development. The Regional UN System supports the substantial preparations of the region’s multi-stakeholder platform for SDG implementation. The Regional Forum is convened annually by UNECE in close partnership with the Regional UN System and provides the region’s official input to the High-level Political Forum (HLPF).
- The Regional UN System issues publications to advocate for accelerated approaches to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Europe and Central Asia. The Regional Advocacy Paper “Building More Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous Societies in Europe and Central Asia” provides key policy recommendations to help countries overcome existing development bottlenecks in SDG implementation. Several papers by Issue-based Coalitions give guidance on integrating cross-cutting thees (e.g. gender equality, health) in the localization of the SDGs in Europe and Central Asia.
- The Issue-based Coalitions pool expertise and resources across the Regional UN-System to support countries achieve the SDGs. The Issue-based Coalitions help realize synergies among related areas of work of different UN entities and support countries to achieve the SDGs, through guidance notes, policy advice, advocacy, technical assistance etc.
