On 2 September 2020, the Special Envoy met with Ms. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) to share about his mandate and inform of the global and African situation on road safety.
The Special Envoy also highlighted the SDG related targets and updated on the UN General Assembly Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety (A/RES/74/299) adopted in New York on 31 August 2020. After advising on the similarity in problem, that road safety also affects the most vulnerable countries, including Africa, the Special Envoy shared about the good partnership with the African Union, in particular, with the Commissioner of Infrastructure and Energy, as well as the strong collaboration with the Economic Commission for Africa, through its Executive Director.
In conclusion, he updated on the status of the Road Safety Performance Reviews in Uganda, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.
