26th Session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy 26 - 28 September 2017 Salle XII, Palais des Nations, Geneva

26 - 28 September 2017
Salle XII, Palais des Nations Geneva Switzerland

The energy transition is moving rapidly as evidenced by the way energy system forecasts have shifted recently. Nevertheless, important gaps to address the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development persist. The Committee on Sustainable Energy already discussed the gaps between current actions taken by governments and the commitments they have made, based on an ambition to limit temperature rises to well below 2°C. With the overall theme "regional cooperation" the focus of the twenty-sixth session is to examine the role that the Committee and its six subsidiary bodies can play to accelerate delivery on energy for sustainable development.

Highlights of the agenda include a keynote address by
Dr. Sun Xiansheng, Secretary General, International Energy Forum
He will speak about the power of dialogue and multi-stakeholder collaboration to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

Participants are invited to explore what sustainable energy means for the UNECE region. The objective of the session is to explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation across and within regions, governments, and the United Nations system to address cross-cutting energy issues and to discuss partnerships for enhanced capacity building and sharing of experiences.

Following the Committee session, a Regional Workshop on the Development of National Sustainable Energy Policies will be held on 29 September, 10:00-17.00. It is organized under the framework of the UN Development Account project Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. National Government officials and international experts will share experiences and challenges for the development of national sustainable energy policies in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. The workshop results will feed into the UNECE Pathways to Sustainable Energy Project which combines modelling and policy dialogue to provide answers on how countries can attain sustainable energy by 2015.
