Phosphates for sustainable development:
Fertilizers and phosphogypsum in the circular economy
Thursday, 22 October 2020 12:00 – 13.30
Phosphate resources have been included in the IAEA NORM Industry list since 2006. In the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development “Decade of Action” (2020-2030), the phosphate fertilizer/phosphogypsum value chain can be counted an essential contributor to global soil fertility, nutrient and water use efficiency, primary resource conservation, carbon sequestration, food security and nutrition for both people and their livestock. To do so, it must maintain the highest standards of health, safety and environmental accountability, based on harmonized global standards and best practices. Now the industry, partnering with governments, investors and academia, is challenged to provide the comprehensive roadmap for achieving excellence in the safe and sustainable management of phosphate resources in the “new normal” post-COVID-19 world. This new normal will be founded up a new point of environmental-economic equilibrium, fully compatible with the principles of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investment. In this workshop, speakers from governments, industry, academia, international organization and the financial institutions will explain the vision, with specific examples and case studies.
