Regional Seminar on United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) Application to Russian Federation and CIS Members

Regional Seminar on United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) Application to Russian Federation and CIS Members

20 - 24 April 2003
Moscow Russian Federation

Overview of Seminar

The Federal Ministry of Natural Resources and UNECE organised the above Regional Seminar with the aim of assisting Russian and CIS experts in adapting their national classification to the UN Framework Classification for Energy Reserves/Resources.

In early 2003, the Russian Government officially requested the Federal Ministry of Natural Resources to create a Task Force on this issue with the mandate to elaborate a new national classification for energy commodities (oil, natural gas, coal and uranium). This new classification should be comparable and compatible with the internationally recognised classifications (SPE/WPC for hydrocarbons, IAEA Red Book Classification for Uranium, and also with the 3-Dimensional UN Framework Classification). The Russian Classification should be finalised by end of 2003 and tested on different deposits over the next three years.

Some 90 participants from Russian state institutions, oil, gas, coal, uranium and mineral companies participated in the seminar, together with participants from 10 other countries, largely CIS member states.
