European Road Safety Day 2008

European Road Safety Day: “Road Safety in our Cities”

The UNECE Transport Division participated in the second European Road Safety Day, organized by the European Commission on 13 October 2008 in Paris.

“Two thirds of road accidents and one third of fatal accidents take place in urban zones. This motivated our decision to dedicate the second European Road Safety Day to road safety in our cities. This Day is an excellent occasion to raise awareness of this phenomenon to European citizens,” said Mr. Antonio Tajani, European Commissioner for Transport in a statement.

Around 600 people registered for the event which included presentations by high-level road safety stakeholders as well as an exhibition with around 40 stands dedicated to the most significant initiatives and progress made in Europe to improve road safety.

Three main themes were explored during the conference: the needs of vulnerable users, such as pedestrians and drivers of two-wheel vehicles; arranging our cities for better road safety; and improving citizen behaviour to foster a new culture based on prevention.

The Road Safety Day aimed at promoting better dialogue between all road users in the urban environment, and between users and decision-makers.

The European Road Safety Day 2008 was held in Paris, coinciding with the current French presidency of the EU.
