Workshop on setting targets under the Protocol to support implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals

04 - 05 May 2017
Salle V, Palais des Nations Geneva Switzerland

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 as a next step in the world’s development agenda. As water is at the core of sustainable development, the implementation of SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation and of other water related goals and targets will be key to fulfill the aspiration of the 2030 Agenda.

With its holistic and preventive approach to water and sanitation, and a focus on quality and equity issues, the Protocol has been a precursor of the SDGs and has put the pan-European region on the right track promoting integration of policies. It now has the potential to help making the water, sanitation and health related SDGs a reality in our region.

The workshop provided a forum for:

  • exchanging experience on the arrangements made to support the implementation of the SDGs, in particular SDG6,
  • analyzing how the Protocol, and in particular the process of setting targets and implementing them, can support attaining the water, sanitation and health goals by 2030.

The workshop outcomes will feed into the development of a guidance booklet on how to translate the 2030 Agenda into national targets set under the Protocol.

The workshop was held back to back with the ninth meeting of the Task Force on Target Setting and Reporting.
