From 21-25 February 2022, the ECE 75th Inland Transport Committee (ITC) took place in Geneva. The Special Envoy engaged in many conversations during the period including panel discussions, bilateral meetings and side events. The Special Envoy participated in a panel discussion on “Achieving a decade of delivery for Road Safety” and gave remarks at two side events. In the side event on “Automation, Connectivity and E-Mobility”, the Special Envoy added emphasized increasing access to technologies for low- and middle- income countries. In the side event on “Used Cars”, the Special Envoy highlighted the shared responsibility between importers and exporters on strengthening quality control on used cars, especially for safety standards.

On its margins, the Special Envoy met with the Senegalese Delegation to importune them on needed action to turn the Road Safety situation around in Senegal and to encourage them to set an example for the African Union. The Special Envoy also met with Mr. Steffen Bilger, Vice Minister of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany to encourage participation at the HLM and to invite the country to be a donor to the UNRSF.
The Special Envoy engaged in a conversation with H.E. Ms. Aishath Nabula, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of the Maldives, H.E. Mr. Stuart Harold Comberbach, Permanent Representative of Zimbabwe in Geneva and with Bishop Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works for Guyana to advocate for road safety efforts to accelerate progress on road safety-related SDGs, to highlight the UN’s response to global road safety and to encourage engagement with the UNRSF.
