Introduction
The United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) recently launched the revision of Recommendation 33, a tool that is used as a guidance on the establishment of a Single Window by most governments and international organizations. This Recommendation is a part of a series of recommendations on the topic that has been developing for more than 10 years, as well as other emerging projects that contribute to the implementation of SWs. These include methods of information exchange and new mechanisms.
Since 2004, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UN/CEFACT’s parent body) has organized four international conferences on the topic of SW which contributed to the family of SW recommendations that we have today (Recommendations 33, 34, 35 and 36, as well as other deliverables/documents published on the website: www.unece.org/cefact). The fourth conference resulted in the decision to revise Recommendation 33; this allowed to bring forwards other parallel solutions and examine how these can contribute to companies’ competitiveness.
This half-day session seeks to assess all of the work (past, present and future) conducted by UN/CEFACT with regard to SW. Several recent UN/CEFACT projects aimed to directly facilitate electronic transmissions and contribute to companies’ competitiveness will be presented such as Data Pipeline, Reference Data Models, or Single Submission Portals.
