Two session slots: Morning Session: 09:30 - 11:00 CEST | Afternoon Session: 15:00 - 16:30 CEST
Organized by: United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and International Trade Centre (ITC) with the Sustainable Leather Foundation
Abstract:
Building upon the achievements of the EU-supported project “Enhancing traceability and transparency for more sustainable value chains in the garment and footwear sector”, the UNECE and ITC, in collaboration with the Sustainable Leather Foundation, are hosting two online workshops on June 4, 2024, focusing on enhancing traceability and transparency in the leather and beef sectors. The workshops will serve to discuss the adaptation and implementation of the Traceability and Transparency Toolbox with recommendations, guidelines, and standards for value chain traceability and transparency developed by the project for the garment and footwear sector, with a particular view to overcoming the disconnect between the bovine hides and beef industries to allow for full traceability of leather back to the farm level. The workshops will also explore the challenges of implementing traceability systems, especially in high-volume, low-technology regions and among small family farms. Participants will gain insights from industry experts, learn practical strategies for improving supply chain management, and contribute to advancing sustainability initiatives like the Deforestation Free Trade Gateway, which is expanding from coffee and cocoa to include beef and leather.
