Special Envoy Advocates Road Safety in Thailand

On 22 March, the Special Envoy met with H.E. Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Minister of Transport of Thailand to exchange updates on their activities since their last meeting in February 2018. The Special Envoy commended the Minister for improved road safety data management and strengthened legislation as well as recent introduction of the electronic driver’s licence in Thailand. He encouraged further improvements in road safety governance, including through accession and successful implementation of United Nations road safety conventions. In conclusion, the Special Envoy shared about the newly established United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund as well as its goals and planned activities. 

 

During his visit in Bangkok, the Special Envoy also met with ESCAP Executive Secretary to exchange updates on their activities and priorities. The Special Envoy shared about his upcoming travel plans in the ESCAP region and expressed appreciation of close collaboration in organizing a national level capacity -building workshop in Nepal. He further provided an update on UNRSTF, appreciating ESCAP’s engagement as a participating organization. 
 
Among proposals to jointly promote road safety, was a joint correspondence to ESCAP member States and a foreword from the Special Envoy to ESCAP’s publication on improving road safety, both of which were well received and supported by the Special Envoy.
