Workshop on waste management: Policies and practices on the basis of UNECE Environmental Performance Reviews

The workshop on the development of waste management policies and practices, based on UNECE Environmental Performance Reviews (EPRs), was held in Skopje from 19 to 20 September 2023. Participants discussed the regulatory framework, access to waste management services, gender mainstreaming, and Extended Producer Responsibility schemes. The considered links between waste generation and management and circular economy and mechanisms to mitigate environmental impacts from waste management.

In addition, the participants shared experiences, showcased best practices, established priorities for forthcoming steps to enhance the implementation rate of the EPR recommendations, and explored potential regional cooperation avenues. In conclusion, they deliberated on the needs for sustainable waste management finance in the region and agreed on a set of topics for subsequent workshops.
