Mapping air pollutant emission sources in a country helps experts and decision-makers identify the most effective policies. Understanding the regional distribution of emissions is crucial for effective policy implementation.
Spatially allocating—or gridding—emissions is technically challenging. It involves applying a gridding matrix to transform source-based inventory emissions into gridded emissions.
Under the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (Air Convention), Parties now report gridded emissions with a 0.1° x 0.1° longitude-latitude spatial resolution. This fine resolution allows for more precise attribution of emissions on the map.
To assist Armenia in developing gridded emissions, UNECE organized a workshop in Yerevan from June 24-27, 2024. The training focused on practical exercises in compiling, calculating, and spatially allocating emissions using geographic information systems (GIS) for point, area, and line sources across various sectors. This training was preceded by a webinar on May 20, 2024, introducing the methods and tools for collecting and processing data for grid emissions.
