Background
To realize SDGs and deliver healthy and nutritious diets for all, the global food system needs to become more productive, inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and resilient.
The Regional Preparatory Meeting in Europe and Central Asia held ahead of the 2023 United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) emphasized that food loss and waste is a priority in the region and noted the need to better leverage trade to support food systems transformation.
Following the UNFSS+2 Stocktaking moment, and in response to the themes of the Economic Commission for Europe at its 70th session held in April 2023, the roundtable focused on two aspects of sustainable food systems: (i) food loss and waste prevention and reduction, and (ii) the role of digitalization in ensuring efficient agricultural trade, with a focus on the needs and current solutions for national inspection bodies, with the aim to identify potential future work of the Working Party in this regard.
