Sixteenth Annual Session of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane wa held on 3-4 March 2021 in Geneva and online. The session was organized through Interprefy and offered simultaneous translation (ENG/RUS/FR).

During the session the secretariat provided an overview of recent activities of the Committee on Sustainable Energy following its twenty-ninth session, 25-27 November 2020, as well as any decisions taken related to the work of the Group of the Experts including by the Executive Committee of ECE. On the first day (3 March) the Group of Experts also reviewed new developments in methane management in selected countries and explored their plans for the future of their coal sector. The day closed with a discussion on potential involvement of the Group of Experts in current and future methane-related activities and initiatives, which are being undertaken worldwide to help attain the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On 4 March, the Group reviewed the accomplishments achieved under the 2020-2021 work plan and discussed its work plan for 2022-2023. The above-mentioned review included reports on activities by International Centres of Excellence on CMM (ICE-CMM) in Poland and China. The preparation of the new work plan was accompanied by a discussion on the Group’s future direction and focus of its activities. The Group decided to request the Committee on Sustainable Energy to change its name to Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition and expand its mandate accordingly. The issue is to be decided by the Committee at its 30th session in November 2021. The session ended with the eleventh joint meeting of the Group of Experts on CMM and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Coal Subcommittee.
