UNECE signs United Nations Programme of Cooperation for Sustainable Development for 2017-2021 with Albania

In the framework of a United Nations Programme of Cooperation for Sustainable Development, UNECE will provide technical assistance to Albania in a variety of areas including housing and urban development and energy efficiency. This will also include increasing the capacity of national authorities to implement the UNECE Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents as well as enhancing transboundary cooperation in the Drin river basin. The Programme was signed on 24 October by UNECE and the Government of Albania for the period of 2017-2021.

Drawing on the UNECE “Regulatory and Procedural Barriers to Trade in the Republic of Albania: Needs Assessment”, finalized in 2016, UNECE will support the Government of Albania in improving its overall competitiveness in domestic and global markets. Through its work on production and dissemination of internationally comparable demographic, social, economic, and environmental statistics, UNECE will support Albania in measuring the progress towards achievement of the 2030 Development Agenda. The Government of Albania – UN Programme of Cooperation for Sustainable Development builds on the successes of the previous programme and brings together knowledge and resources of the UN System working under the “Delivering as One” since 2006. It is aligned with the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals as well as EU accession reform agenda pursued by the Government of Albania.

The four priority areas for cooperation between the Government of Albania and development partners include the following:

  • Governance and Rule of Law
  • Social cohesion: health, education, social protection, and gender-based violence
  • Economic Growth, Labour and Agriculture
  • Environment and Climate Change

The UNDAF development partners are the following resident and regionally based United Nations Organizations: UNICEF, UNDP, UNHCR, UN Women, UNFPA, WHO, FAO, IOM, IAEA, IAEA, UNCTAD, UNECE, UNEP, UNESCO, UNIDO, ILO, UNAIDS, UNODC.
