Data collection, evaluation and dissemination (Warsaw Integrated Programme of Work (WIPoW) Work Area 1)

  • Since 2017, the Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire (JFSQ) has included data on recovered post-consumer wood. Around half of the UNECE member States currently provide data under this category. The Section coordinated with EUROSTAT, ITTO and FAO to make the JFSQ a joint global collection tool covering all regions using the same principles.

  • The Joint Wood Energy Enquiry (JWEE) includes data on the amount of wood energy produced from wood processing by-products and post-consumer recovered wood.

 Providing knowledge for informed policy making (WIPoW Work Area 2)

  • Panel discussion on “Forests and the Circular Economy” was organised during the UNECE Committee on Forests and Forest Industry, Vancouver, November 2018 (concept note). Outputs from the session include:

  • Presentation on green economy, circular economy and bio-economy concepts;

  • Presentation of the examples on how circular economy principles are being implemented in the forest sector;

  • Discussion on the implications of circular economy for the forest sector and the role the forest sector can play in a circular economy.

  • Panel discussion on “Forests and the Circular Economy” was organised during “Forêt” joint session of the UNECE Committee on Forests and Forest Industry and FAO European Forestry Commission, Geneva, November 2019 (background document). Outputs include:

  • Presentation of circular economy principles and fundamentals;

  • Presentation of sustainable use of forest resources and circular value chains in the forest sector;

  • Discussion on regulations and tools needed to advance the transition to the circular economy in the forest sector.;

Communication materials and events on the role of the forest sector in the circular economy (WIPoW Work Area 3)

  • Exhibition “Forests and the circular economy” was organised during the 5th European Forest Week, 2019 (News release).
  • Exhibition “Forests for Fashion” was organised during the 4th UN Environment Assembly, 2019 (News release).
