Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will demand substantial resources and a strengthened global partnership for sustainable development. Estimates of annual investment requirements for infrastructure alone amount to $5-7 trillion globally. The means to address these vast financing needs are available. What is required is the creation of suitable frameworks and effective instruments for the mobilisation of resources -international and domestic, public and private.
UNECE and the Regional UN Development Group for Europe and Central Asia will hold a regional preparatory consultation in Geneva on 23 March, focussing on strategies and instruments the UNECE region has to offer to promote resource mobilization for sustainable development and the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. The summary of the discussions will serve as regional input to the debates at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa from 13-16 July, where ambitious agreements and commitments must be made.
The meeting will be chaired by Ambassador Michael Gerber, Special Envoy for Global Sustainable Development of Switzerland. Other confirmed high-level participants include Amina J. Mohammed, the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning and Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.
Raising the necessary financing to advance the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda will require the collaboration between different development actors and the strong involvement of the private sector. The Regional Consultation in Geneva will be a multi-stakeholder event, providing an opportunity for inter-active discussions between experts from governments, civil society, the private sector, international organizations and academia.
