At the Jubilee 30th session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy held on 22-24 September 2021 in Geneva, Switzerland, the UNECE Executive Secretary, Ms. Olga Algayerova, honoured a select list of individuals for their outstanding work and contributions to the work of the Committee over the last thirty years.
The Chair of the Expert Group on Resource Management, Mr. David MacDonald, had the honour to be among the awardees. Mr. MacDonald was recognized for his contributions to the Committee and the Expert Group on Resource Management, leading the development and implementation of the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources and overseeing its application to renewable energy, injection projects and anthropogenic resources.
Mr. MacDonald’s award coincided with the latest ECOSOC Decision recognizing the updated UNFC (2019) (read more).
David MacDonald is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts on reserves and resources classification, estimation, management and disclosure. During his 38 year career at BP he had a proven record of successful design, implementation and management of internal governance and operating practices for reserves and resource valuation and progression. He now acts as an independent resources management advisor on energy matters, providing guidance to industry and governments on issues relating to sustainable resources management
Since 2012, he has been the Chair of the Expert Group on Resource Management where he has overseen the publication of the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC), development of the United Nations Resources Management System (UNRMS) and the expansion of the Expert Group’s work into the area of renewable energy. During this time, UNFC has been expanded to cover anthropogenic and other secondary resources that are part of our move towards a true circular economy.
