On 3-6 June the International Centre of Excellence on Coal Mine Methane in China (ICE-CMM China) delivered, in cooperation with the Huozhou Coal and Power Group, the first of the planned three stages of a pre-feasibility-study of methane drainage and utilization in a Tenghui coal mine. Another two sessions are expected to take place in August and October 2018.

A training for future trainers (12 local experts and practitioners in the field of CMM) was also organized. The latter are being prepared to engage in activities promoting and disseminating in China Best Practices developed by the UNECE Group of Experts on CMM .

The event was led by U.S EPA, Global Methane Initiative (GMI), and Shanxi Coking Coal Group (SCCG), which are UNECE partners, and key actors supporting activities of ICE-CMM China. The Vice-chairs of the UNECE Group of Experts on CMM, Ms. Felicia Ruiz, Mr. David Creedy, and Mr. Clark Talkington were present on site and share their knowledge with the local mining community. 

The training addressed the following issues:

  • Project pre-feasibility and additional data collection;
  • Risk assessment and occupational health; 
  • Mine safety evaluation;
  • Best practice in methane drainage and use.
