The UN Road Safety Fund launched its 2022 Annual Report on 25 May with public and private sector and civil society partners in a media event at the International Transport Forum Summit in Leipzig, Germany.

The latest Report “Local actions, Global Impacts” captures how the Fund is responding to critical road safety gaps in 46 partner countries through local actions that are driving progress on a global scale in support of Sustainable Development Goals 3.6 and 11.2.

At the event, Germany, Michelin, the International Road Federation, and Argentina – alongside the UN Economic Commission for Europe, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety and the Fund – showcased highlights from the Report and the joint action leading to investments in safe, sustainable and inclusive transport systems.

Case stories in the Report feature results from the Fund’s 36 projects and how the Fund is delivering support – with thanks to 26 corporate and government donors – to improve national road safety systems where it is most needed. These locally-rooted global solutions – led by 14 UN partner organisations, and with five civil society partner organisations now on board – span the five pillars of the Global Plan of Action for Road Safety.

“This 2022 Annual Report shows that the Fund is taking important steps to deliver on its goal to make sure that low- and middle-income countries have increased access to technical road safety expertise to fill critical gaps in their national road safety systems,” stated Ambassador Lotte Knudsen, Chair of the Fund’s Advisory Board and Weimin Ren, Chair of the Fund’s Steering Committee. “We are confident that this 2022 Report will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates working towards safer roads and healthier communities.”

“We can make impact,” commented Jean Todt, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety. “This is why I call on more nations, corporations and individuals to support the work of the Fund – and to join our coalition for change. As this 2022 Annual Report sets out well: We know how investments can lead to results at the local level, and we also understand what is needed from us at the global level to build a safer future for all.”

“The UN Road Safety Fund is the foremost way for nations, corporations and individuals to financially contribute to the UN and its partners’ efforts to support countries’ road safety programmes,” said Nneka Henry, Head, UN Road Safety Fund. “As we launch our 2022 Annual Report, I thank our donors, partners and governing members for their continued support and trust in the Fund.”

Notes to Editors

The UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) – set up in 2018 – is a global partnership working to help halve road deaths and injuries in low- and middle-income countries, where over 90% of the 1.3 million fatalities occur each year. The Fund works with communities, civil society, governments, companies and UN agencies to address critical gaps in national road safety systems. As an innovative pooled fund, the UNRSF mobilizes financing from private, public and individual donors channelling resources to high-impact, scalable and sustainable road safety projects worldwide.
