Purpose: The event aims to promote project-based activities for operationalizing selected (related to the themes of the Conference) Environmental Performance Reviews (EPR) recommendations  of the UNECE EPRs of Morocco, North Macedonia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan with a view to enhance the environmental performance of these countries for the benefit of all.

Target group: Governments, IGOs, NGOs, donors and financial institutions, and other participants interested in learning about bankable EPR recommendations and ideas to operationalizing them through joint efforts and multistakeholder partnerships.

Brief description: For over 25 years, the UNECE Environmental Performance Reviews (EPRs) support countries efforts to improve their environmental governance, management and performance contributing to enhanced environmental protection and increased resilience to adversities. The latest EPRs of Morocco (2022), Uzbekistan (2020), North Macedonia (2019) and Tajikistan (2017) address issues related to greening the economy and financing environmental protection, and education for sustainable development. In addition, since 2017, the EPRs address relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets.

Each of the four reviewed countries will present approaches and project-based solutions identified for implementing EPR recommendations and achieving relevant SDG targets, related to one or several themes of the Conference. Event discussants will consider the proposed solutions and share their views and experience on the matter.

Participants in the event will contribute to the discussion by sharing good practice for an efficient and effective action in greening the infrastructure, making the tourism sector sustainable, and embracing education for sustainable development.

Representatives of donors and financial institutions will be invited to consider proposed solutions for their potential co-financing. IGOs will be encouraged to consider the EPR recommendations in developing national programmes and activities.

Expected outcomes: Sharing of experience among countries on best approaches and solutions for efficient and effective application of EPR recommendations; networking; forging partnerships and joining efforts for advancing environmental governance and performance in the reviewed countries and in the UNECE region and beyond. Also, a medium and long-term outcome would be an increased implementation rate of EPR recommendations in reviewed countries contributing to enhancing environmental protection.
