Presentations and Conclusion

Background

Green building is a strong trend in the residential and non-residential sectors in North America and Europe. This trend has major impacts on the wood markets and will eventually impact the entire forest sector.

Objectives

To identify and develop the emerging concept of “green building” in response to evolving policy changes in reaction to global concerns about climate change, energy security, prices and efficiency, and increased societal and institutional consciousness of sustainability;

  • To clarify and profile the technical, environmental and economic properties, including advantages and disadvantages of wood as a material for construction elements, fittings and furniture and as a component of building systems;
  • To identify and assess the limitations to the use of wood in building (e.g. building rules, traditions, information – including misconceptions, education, training and skills, quality, dimensions and availability of wood vis-à-vis other materials);
  • To identify the actions needed for an increased use of wood in green building, including:
    • Review and enhance existing material and product standards;
    • Review and adapt national building codes and standards;
    • Enhance and develop new building materials products and systems, including composites.

Output

  • Increase collaboration between forest products stakeholders to promote wood as the preferable building material.
  • Conclusions and recommendations to be presented on October 21st at the joint Timber Committee and European Commission
  • Market Discussions.
