INFOREST – your pathway to data on forests in the UNECE region

INFOREST – your pathway to data on forests in the UNECE region

Launch of the INForest – data and knowledge platform for forests and forest sector in the UNECE region

23 March 2021 13:30 - 14:30

Access to relevant and reliable data is central to our efforts to protect, maintain, and sustainably manage our forests. However, too often, data on forests is scarce, dispersed over various online platforms, and has limited accessibility. Building on its long history of working on forest monitoring, data and assessment in the UNECE region, the Joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section is aiming to change this with a new online platform, “INForest”, that gathers key pieces of information on forests and the forest-based sector in the UNECE region in one place and highlights the wealth of information that is available.

The platform offers the most up-to-date information about how much forest there is and how this number has changed over decades, the structure of forest, detailed information about the goods and services forests provide, as well as their contribution to the health of our economies, societies and the environment.

INForest” was launched on 23 March 2021, at 13.30 (Geneva time) at the online event, at which the background, functioning and use of new platform was presented. The event also featured a launch of the Pan-European forest data platform, which extends the scope of the FAO Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) online database, and a more general discussion on the availability and reliability of forest-related data in the UNECE region.

The meeting was organised as a side event of the 42nd Session of the Joint UNECE/FAO Working Party on Forest Statistics, Economics and Management. For questions related to the event, please contact Roman Michalak at [email protected]
