Transboundary watersheds: sharing basins for people, planet, prosperity and peace

Transboundary water cooperation, hydro-diplomacy and integrated basin management as drivers of sustainable development, peace and security within the framework of the development-humanitarian-peace nexus

16 June 2021 13:45 - 14:45

This session will discuss how transboundary water cooperation, hydro-diplomacy and integrated basin management concretely help to address climate change, prevent conflicts and help achieve the SDGs and Green Deal. Transboundary cooperation, as required by SDG target 6.5, is one of the key means through which to tackle the global water crisis. Panellists will debate how to strengthen transboundary cooperation, including the role of legal and institutional frameworks, such as the Water Convention.  Examples of how basin agreements and institutions have promoted development and facilitated investments and peace will be shown and the role of various actors, including the EU, will be discussed.  Recommendations will focus on how to integrate transboundary cooperation in external and development policies within the framework of the development-humanitarian-peace nexus.

Co-organisers:

  • UNECE, Water Convention Secretariat
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Slovenia
