UNECE Symposium on Social Housing

UNECE Symposium on Social Housing

28 - 30 November 2004
Vienna Austria

UNECE considers the future of social housing to be central to achieve sustainable urban development. To support its member states in the development of social housing programmes, an international task force has been set up by the Committee on Human Settlements in September 2002 to develop new guidelines on social housing. After two years of work these guidelines will be presented to the public at this Symposium.

At this international symposium, hosted by the City of Vienna, experts from the 55 UNECE member states were invited to comment and to discuss the finalized guidelines on social housing and to enrich the compendium with examples of best practice. The symposium brought together different participants of the social housing sphere: policymakers, experts, housing providers and researchers, as well as members of international and non-governmental organizations. The conference therefore provided a platform for delegates and experts from across the UNECE region to contribute to an international dialogue on social housing.
