Rationale
The Forest Congress for the Caucasus and Central Asia covered recent forest developments in the Caucasus and Central Asian region.
The main topics were:
State of Forests of the Caucasus and Central Asia
A report was launched providing the first extensive overview of the region’s forest. The report presents the forest resources and the forest sector of the region, including trends and challenges, policies and institutions of the forest sector in the countries, as well as the policy responses in place or planned for the challenges. National-level forest monitoring systems
All countries of the UNECE/FAO, UNDA project “Accountability Systems for Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia” presented their criteria and indicators’ sets for sustainable forest management. These national-level C&I sets were developed during the 2016-2019 period and will set the basis and framework for forest monitoring systems at the national level and international forest reporting.
Forest Landscape Restoration
The implementation of forest landscape restoration to fulfill the Astana pledges were mapped out and funding opportunities were discussed. Countries presented their forest landscape restoration projects and approaches as well as their plans to implement pledges to achieve the restoration of 2.5 million hectares by 2030.
