UN/CEFACT Mini Conference on Reference Data Models: Anticipating and Following Technological Trends in eBusiness Data Exchanges

27 March 2017
Room XXIV, Palais des Nations Geneva Switzerland

United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) Reference Data Models represent a breakthrough in the way eBusiness communications will be facilitated in the future. As such, they can be of interest to all domains!

In the interest of anticipating and following technological trends, UN/CEFACT is extending from a document-centric to a process-driven approach for electronic business message development applying the UN/CEFACT Core Component Business Document Assembly (CCBDA) Methodology on a Reference Data Model.

The UN/CEFACT Reference Data Models are based on a rich collection of business artefacts, standardized, harmonized and maintained by the UN/CEFACT Library Maintenance Focal Point and published as a contextualized subset of the United Nations Core Component Library (UN/CCL). The Cross Industry Invoice is the first process-driven electronic business message derived from the Master Structure of the Supply Chain Reference Data Model (SCRDM).

A new project, which started this year, will provide electronic business exchange structures for the Cross Industry messages Quotation, Cataloguing, Ordering, Delivering and Remittance Advice. The Electronic Road Consignment Note and Logistical Pipeline Exchange are the electronic business exchange structures being derived from the Master Structure of the Multi Modal Transport Reference Data Model (MMTRDM).

The SCRDM and MMT projects have developed an international Supply Chain Reference and Multi Modal Transport Reference Data Model respectively.

Benefits of SCRDM and MMT for both the government and private sector include:

  • Providing global cross-syntax Reference Data Models through the principles enshrined in the United Nations Layout Key (UNLK), the United Nations Trade Data Element Directory (UNTDED) and the United Nations Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT);
  • The use of a syntax neutral semantic model for defining business data exchanges;
  • Reduction of administrative burden by efficient reuse of data shared within the Buy/ Ship/Pay model;
  • The provision of global semantics covering all reference data model business data requirements based on the internationally accepted UN Core Component Library which is standardized and harmonized by UN/CEFACT;
  • Facilitation of implementations by providing Business Names standardized and harmonized by UN/CEFACT;
  • Enhanced interoperability of data across supply chain and transport & logistic business processes;
  • Standardized business document structures based on a common ‘Master’ structure;
  • The support of information sharing, for example, enabled by data pipelines, with the timely capture of quality data from data sources ensuring supply chain visibility;
  • Facilitation of information flows between trade and government (Single Window); and
  • Integrated international code lists, e.g. UN/EDIFACT code lists.

Objective

The first part of this mini conference will introduce a concept of a UN/CEFACT Reference Data Model. The second part will provide more information on how this concept is applied for the Supply Chain and Transport & Logistics domains. The third part focuses on the links between the procedures of the Library Maintenance Focal Point and the maintenance of Reference Data Models.

This mini conference will provide participants with useful information on the above-described UN/CEFACT Reference Data Models. Participants will also get an insight into how domains use these Reference Data Models to create standard business documents, such as a purchase order, a despatch advice, an invoice etc.

Target Audience

Experts and decision makers in the fields of Supply Chain and Transport & Logistics.

Organisers

The mini conference is being organized by the UN/CEFACT:

  • Supply Chain Management Domain within the Buy/Pay PDA;
  • Transport & Logistics Domain within the Ship PDA; and
  • Library Maintenance Team within the Methodology and Technology PDA.
