A UNECE delegation headed by Deputy Executive Secretary Dmitry Mariyasin has visited the headquarters of the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg to hold annual consultations and strengthen partnership between two institutions.
The meeting came in the aftermath of the discussion held by UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova and Vice-President of EIB Ambroise Fayolle during COP27 in Egypt last month, where the two organizations collaborated on various events.
“We look forward to building on our various joint activities in the recent past, and to define concrete plans to strengthen our cooperation on the themes of climate action and environmental sustainability, just transition, sustainable energy, transport and urban development,” noted Ms. Algayerova at the opening of the consultations in Luxembourg.
With their combined expertise, resources, convening power, and potential to boost the implementation of the relevant UN developing norms and standards, UNECE and EIB could help devise innovative and high-impact solutions to the various challenges facing the world today, ensuring that no one is left behind in global efforts to build a sustainable, inclusive and green future.
UNECE representatives noted that joint cooperation on issues such as air, water, food security, energy efficiency, climate change adaptation and mitigation could be mutually beneficial since the UNECE legal instruments strengthen national and transboundary connectivity and environmental governance, thus creating an enabling setting for investments.
Regarding joint efforts on mobility and transport connectivity, the UNECE delegation recalled the excellent collaboration in recent years on road safety and adaptation to climate change in the transport sector. It also welcomed ideas on investing in implementation of the norms and regulations under UNECE’s global transport conventions.
Finally, EIB and UNECE discussed addressing the challenges for the reconstruction and recovery efforts in Ukraine, and building back better for a more climate resilient and equal future.
